About us

A strategic partnership offering an innovative transdisciplinary approach.

Most of university programs are highly specialized, failing to meet the current imperative to teach how to work across silos. This new International Master Degree aims to become the reference for introducing an innovative, newly integrated and multi-perspective approach in framing and implementing urban resilience and sustainability.

The International Master Degree in City Resilience Design and Management was conceived by the Urban Resilience research Net (URNet) and partners, and is hosted by the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC), in Barcelona. Scoll down to see who we are.

Urban Resilience Research Network

URNet is the most prestigious global network in urban resilience research, with over 450 scholars sprawled across more than 50 countries. The aim of this network is to support researchers in dealing with the complexity of framing and operationalising urban resilience, avoiding its increasingly mainstream simplistic or metaphorical use. Since almost a decade, URNet members have been shaping urban resilience definitions, theories and practices through their papers, books, reports and consultancy acticities. The network members address almost every resilience perspective and have international and locals partners through which working and collaborating. The first of the triennial cycle of Global Conferences title “Reframing Urban Resilience Implementation” was organized in 2018 by the URNet, which is co-organizing workshops and event internationally. Students will meet some of the core Scientific Committee URNet members, and work closely to the Executive Board members while exploring resilience perspectives and becoming part of this global community of practice.

Universitat Internacional de Catalunya

Our program is hosted by The International University of Catalonia (UIC) School of Architecture. Most lectures will be held at the UIC Sarria Building but Barcelona itself will serve as a case study, and many presentations and working session could be done at the Municipality, different city districts, or online. UIC Barcelona is one of the most  International universities in Barcelona, placed few subways stops from the very city centre and hosting students coming from all over the world because offering them a customized support and education with a global perspective. To this regard, UIC is offering to this master an efficent virtual dashboard, were students can have online classes (when not in Barcelona) or tutorships. We like to maximize the use of these digital tools in order to reduce carbon emissions (prioritizing online teaching over making all professors flying) and allowing students tolearn and collaborate independently by where they wish to be (in Barcelona, or in their cities). Furthermore, UIC Virtual Dashboard allows us to record many seminars, classes and debates, sharing them among us (within the ALUMNI private page). Also, students will be allowed to freely take part virtually (or access the recording) to future classes, in order to promote and maximize the “continuous learning process”.

Barcelona Urban Resilience Lab

The Barcelona Urban Resilience Lab is the new Lab of the Urban Resilience Research Network. Based in Barcelona its mission is to leverage on the scientific knowledge gathered from its research collaborations to foster collective action-oriented activities, enhancing urban resilience and sustainability in the city and across the country. In partnership with our master program, the Urban Resilience Research Network and other local actors, this Lab is conceived as a test bed for the master program’s workshops on Barcelona city resilience or students projects needing support and an “incubator” for projects idea and helping fundrising.

Re-City is an international platform exploring the linkages between Social Sustainability and Climate Change, Social Justice and Technological innovations. Coordinated by Fundación Catalunya Europa, it aims at framing new indicators for social sustainability and resilience to be proposed and integrated within current planning practices in Barcelona and other 30 cities of the network METROPOLIS (partner of this platform, jointly with a consortium of private, public, local and international partners). Re-City organizes a dozes of public talks and technical workshops a year, and collaborate with the Master in City Resilience Design and Management by framing with the students few technical workshops on the most relevant topics related to community resilience and sustainability.

This is THE added value of this Master: THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE having access to CONTINUOUS LEARNING

As UR ALUMNI, you will have access to most of our recorded and livestream classes, allowing you to take part and listen to future classes, access our database, and stay connected within one of the best-informed and up-to-date communities working on urban resilience and sustainability (and of course constantly in touch with URNet members)
