This end of October, four of our student participated to the 7th edition of the UCCRN workshop in Charleroi, Belgium.
The team had the opportunity to assist to several lectures on the project of Port Ouest, a dynamic masterplan aimed at creating a sustainable, multi-functional urban space that blends ecological corridors, economic zones, cultural areas, and public spaces to revitalize the region by 2050.
The workshop was structured in three main activities, the site visit where students visited the Area of Charleroi and the project of Port Ouest from the Charleroi central station, all the way through the Sambre. They took in the actual state of the environment, the industrial zones with the different landmarks, the untamed vegetation and the soil usage.
The next step was to assist to different lectures about the project made by members of the University of Mons, IGRETEC, CleanTech and many more intervenants, with dynamic and constructive conversation between participants.
During the days from Monday afternoon till Thursday morning, the students divided in three groups treating different subjects and dimensions: landscape and environment enhancement, mobility transition engagement and finally metabolic and energy exemplarity aim. The multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary approach’s goal was to propose multiscale solutions to implement in the existing masterplan. The range of these solutions was wide:
- Depollution processes: Phytoremediation,
- Climate shelters,
- Re use of Landmarks as event holder,
- Strengthening the blue and green infrastructures and connecting them,
- Implementation of diverse mobility practices through different mediums,
- Optimisation of water and energy resources and consumption,
- Energy efficiency using solar panels….etc.
The students of the master had the opportunity to work on current challenges of urban resilience, treating of climate change and risk reduction while developing their skills of teamwork, initiative in decision-making, communication and project management.
